General Interest

General
PREVIOUS OCCUPATION
Between 2015 and 2019 she worked as a lawyer at a firm in Alkmaar, Netherlands, specialising in employment, contract and liability law. She left her job to focus on running and qualifying for the Olympic Games. "I can work all my life, but running at the top level is now or never. Although I had a largely sedentary profession, I was also stressed from deadlines. Sometimes I had to work in the evenings, sometimes on weekends. I had to go for a run earlier, otherwise I wouldn't be on time for work. That causes stress and that is also an extra burden on the body. I had symptoms of exhaustion." After initially struggling with full-time running, she decided to do some legal work on a freelance basis. "I didn't have the stress and the responsibilities as a [full-time] lawyer, but a little more certainty in terms of income. When you look from a distance it looks like a fairytale. But that is really the tip of the iceberg that people see. So much happens underneath. There have been ups and downs." COVID-19 IMPACT
She initially was aiming to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, but after the postponement of the 2020 Games in Tokyo and the lack of races and prize money due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she decided to begin marathon training early with the aim of qualifying for the 2020 Games. "Things have gone faster than expected. If I quit my work as a lawyer and said, 'I'm going to Tokyo', it would have been fanciful. I like to dare to dream and to set goals, but I don't say things that I don't believe. It wasn't credible, wasn't realistic, but Paris was. Covid changed everything. I was given extra time and slowly I started to believe I could make it to Tokyo." (ad.nl, 22 Apr 2021)

FURTHER EDUCATION
She graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 2014 with a master's degree in employment law. (victoradvocaten.nl, 01 Sep 2020; LinkedIn profile, 01 Feb 2021)
