He suffered a femoral stress fracture in his left leg in early 2017 and was out for almost a year. He was unable to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, as a result. (3xsport.com, 27 Jun 2017; theage.com.au, 25 Jan 2019; theadvocate.com.au, 22 Sep 2017)

In early 2014 he suffered from iliotibial band syndrome in his knee. As he pushed to return to fitness, he developed swelling near his navicular [foot] bone and missed the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. (heraldsun.com.au, 03 Dec 2015; runnerstribe.com, 20 Nov 2014)

"I feel as though people get away from pure racing these days. Everyone is obsessed by time and paces but ignore the feeling of running." (tempojournal.com, 28 Oct 2019)

General Interest

General
TOKYO MARATHON FOCUS
In 2018 he began preparing to compete in the marathon at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, having previously specialised in track and cross-country running. He competed in the 5000m at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. "It's going to be very hot for that marathon, they're saying it will be the hottest Olympics ever, so that will be fun. I'll still go back and forth with track running. If you run marathons all the time you kill your body and lose that quick speed, which you still need in a marathon." (theage.com.au, 25 Jan 2019)

SUB-TWO HOUR MARATHON PACEMAKER
In 2019 he was part of the pacemaking team when Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge ran the first ever sub-two hour marathon in Vienna, Austria. However, the result did not count as an official record because it was not run under race conditions. "It was to be part of history, people will always talk about it. It's like [British runner] Roger Bannister breaking four minutes for the mile for the first time and 60 years later they are still talking about that."
