LEAVING SOUTHERN SUDAN
Originally a cattle farmer in southern Sudan, he fled the war in his homeland in 2006 to join his parents in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. "Before I came here I did not even have training shoes. Now we have trained and trained, until we see ourselves at a good level, and now we know fully how to be athletes. I am so happy [to compete at the Olympic Games]. I know I am racing on behalf of refugees. I was one of those refugees in the camp and now I have reached somewhere special. If I perform well, I will use that to help support my family and my people." (rio2016.com, 17 Jun 2016; insidethegames.biz, 03 Jun 2016; olympic.org, 03 Jun 2016)

PANDEMIC
In the early part of 2020 he was training at the Tegla Loroupe Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya, but once the COVID-19 pandemic hit he had to return to the Kakuma Refugee Camp. He and other athletes continued to train when they could, but he was unable to compete for the whole of 2020. "When I came [back to the camp] from Nairobi, people were looking to me, thinking maybe I had money or food. But I had none. I was not able to bring my ration card from Nairobi, so I have no ration card here. It is blocked. I am happy with the chances I have had with Tegla, which have allowed me to do something good with my life. If you have support, everything is becoming easy. I am just trying to do my best and to see if I can persevere. So one day I can tell my family that hard work can bring achievements." (worldathletics.org, 12 Jan 2021, 04 Apr 2020)
