He played football when he lived in Morocco, but could not find a suitable football club when he moved with his family to the Netherlands. He followed his cousin and took up Thai boxing but struggled with the technique. His father also did not like him doing Thai boxing and thought he had more of a talent for running. "Once I got a big kick in my ribs and I was out for six months. Back then, my father said the sport was too dangerous. He told me to stop and said I had to take up running. At first I didn't like it. I had to train alone in the cold. But in the end, it was the right choice. When I was doing boxing, I would always be the fastest runner. They always asked me why I was there and why I didn't do something with my running skills. Now I love running more than I ever loved boxing." (nieuws.marokko.nl, 22 Mar 2005; trouw.nl, 07 Apr 2018 )

RIO DISAPPOINTMENT FUELS TOKYO FIRE
He says that narrowly missing out on the qualification standard for the 2016 Olympic Games fuelled his motivation ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo. "In 2015 I missed the Olympics by 30 seconds. Of course I was very disappointed back then, but I knew I would keep fighting right away. Five years later, I have qualified for Tokyo. That is something I always dreamed of. After achieving that goal, I enjoyed my training sessions even more. I know that I would never have qualified for the Olympics without my worst low points. Those setbacks have made me a stronger athlete." (omroepwest.nl, 16 Jun 2021; run2day.nl, 15 Jun 2021)

COVID-19 IMPACT
He says that the lack of competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic benefited his training. He also took up kickboxing during the pandemic. "It was difficult, because nobody knew how long the pandemic would go on for and when competitions would be held again. To shift my focus, I took up some kickboxing again. In the end, the COVID-19 time did me well. Because there were no competitions, I could solely focus on training for the marathon. I always kept believing in myself." (run2day.nl, 14 Jun 2021; nos.nl, 13 Apr 2021; hardloopnieuws.nl, 20 Mar 2021)

SANCTION
In June 2007 he tested positive for the prohibited substance stanozolol during an out-of-competition test in the Netherlands. He was suspended from the sport for two years by the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation. He was eligible to return to competition in June 2009. "During that time, I thought about retiring from the sport. But it also taught me a lot and it made me stronger mentally." (gelderlander.nl, 15 Jun 2009; IAAF, 08 May 2008; trouw.nl, 07 Apr 2018)
