PRE-TOKYO TRAINING
She relocated to the United States of America in 2016 and joined the Nike Oregon Project. After the group folded in 2019, she decided to stay in the US and began training under coach Tim Rowberry. In 2020 she was forced to change her plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, splitting her time between the Netherlands and St. Moritz, Switzerland, and training with Rowberry remotely. FROM ETHIOPIA TO THE NETHERLANDS
At age 15, her mother put her on a plane to seek asylum in the Netherlands. The following year she received a refugee residence permit and in 2013 she obtained a Dutch passport. "Where is my home? Sometimes I don't know that myself. In any case, I feel Dutch. My Ethiopian training companions always find me very open and direct. They are much quieter."
