"As an athlete, you're going to have a lot of criticism, so you have to learn to deal with it. You can't afford for that to make you falter. At the end of the day, even if you did great, you're still going to have critics. For example, I won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and I got, 'He didn't throw that far'. The winning distance does not matter. Once you win, you win." (Wired868TV YouTube channel, 08 Sep 2016)

General
EARLY DAYS
He says the internet played a major role in him learning the javelin. "Technology was basically my first coach. I remember being in Toco [Trinidad and Tobago] at the age of 16, just starting out in my craft. I had to depend on the internet to learn and master my technique. I looked at YouTube for the entire day, trying to copy other athletes and see what I could learn. My first coach was based in Port of Spain [Trinidad and Tobago] and I was in Toco, so the only means of communication between us was via email and video call." (bmobile Life is on YouTube channel, 22 Nov 2018)

OLYMPIC HONOURS
Following his gold medal in javelin at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, 13 August 2012 [the day he returned home] was declared a national holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. He had a new Caribbean Airlines aircraft named in his honour, as well as a housing development and lighthouse in Toco, Trinidad and Tobago. (IAAF, 24 Apr 2013)
