General Interest

General
FROM ERITREA TO SWITZERLAND
He arrived in Switzerland in 2004 as a refugee from Eritrea and continued running. After marrying his wife Senait, who he met in 2008 at a race in Geneva, Switzerland, he was able to apply for a Swiss passport and he received citizenship in early 2014. "I have integrated well. The country [Switzerland] belongs to me." He is supportive of the Refugee Olympic Team, which was introduced at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro by the International Olympic Committee [IOC] and will return for the 2020 Games in Tokyo. "If you are a refugee and you cannot run for your country, there is a solution. No matter where you are, you can compete in the Olympics. I want to say to anybody who has left their country not to worry. You can keep on dreaming." (nzz.ch, 08 Aug 2014; flotrack.org, 03 Nov 2017; tokyo2020.org, 20 Jun 2020)
