She was encouraged to try the sport by her physical education teacher at primary school. She got involved in high jump and triple jump at high school. "I had unusually long legs and was faster than most guys and girls in my class. I loved it from the start. It's not very popular in Jamaica [triple jump], and when young athletes see me do it I hope to inspire them to try it so we can have more athletes in the sport in future. Jamaican triple jumper Kimberly Williams taught me a lot about the sport, it was kind of fun. That's how I started doing it."
