His brother Rojay was a promising thrower at Calabar High School in Kingston, Jamaica. However, he was not training to his full potential so coach Julian Robinson visited their house with the intention of putting him back on the right track. He spotted Fedrick while he was there. "He said to me that I must have some form of talent and told me to come along to training. I thought, 'I am a skinny dude and I don't have the body for it'. Yet the first time I picked up the discus, it went far. I thought, 'Okay, cool, I have a bit of talent for it' and the rest is history." (spikes.iaaf.org, 09 Jun 2016)
