She first tried athletics in the sixth grade in school before starting to specialise in high jump in junior high. During her first year in high school she wanted to get involved in pole vault but her coach asked her to try triple jump instead. "I had shown up to practice the first day and I grabbed the pole and I was doing the drills. I was just about to pole vault until the coach said, 'Um, no, Tori, we're going to have you triple jump'.
