He was involved in football and basketball before focusing on shot put as most of his family were throwers. He also competed in sprints [100m and 4x100m relay] and long jump in elementary school. General Interest

General
NEW BASE
In 2020 he moved to Fayetteville, AR, United States of America, to train with coach Mario Sategna and coach alongside Sategna at the University of Arkansas. He had previously trained at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, United States of America. "I feel like right now [early 2021] I'm in a much better place than I was at this point last year. It's a completely different year for me. Last year [2020] I felt like I was actually struggling a little bit. It was just a big change, moving from the Olympic Training Center to Fayetteville. I was coaching a lot and I was really happy with how life was going in general but it was a learning process. But now I feel like I've hit my stride and I'm where I want to be in terms of my training and my diet, I'm happy with my body weight. The distance I'm now throwing is more, but I feel like in general the foundation is even better than what the distance shows. I'm really happy to break the world indoor record [at the 2021 American Track League meet in Fayetteville, AR, United States of America] and I'm really excited to continue to build on that. I feel like there is even more to come." (worldathletics.org, 18 Feb 2021)

NFL SHOT
In 2016 he was almost recruited by American football team the Indianapolis Colts, who play in the National Football League [NFL]. "They have a special scout. He looks for athletes outside of the traditional football realm to come in and maybe play a more specific role, mostly on defense or as an offensive lineman. I said, 'We'll see how [Olympic] trials go'. Then the [2016] Olympics went pretty much perfect, so I ended up postponing it after that. I've had a pretty successful career since then." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 26 Apr 2019)

FUTURE PLANS
He contemplated taking up a career in finance before the 2016 US Olympic Trials, as he did not expect to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro that year. He went on to win gold in Rio and decided to put his career in finance on hold to become a professional athlete until potentially after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. "An athletics career is short, and it can really end at any time. Thankfully I have a finance degree that will help me when I retire." (forbes.com, 08 Feb 2019)

FURTHER EDUCATION
After completing a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States of America, he returned to the university to complete a master's degree in finance and graduated in 2016. (forbes.com, 08 Feb 2019)
