In 2017 he suffered a tear to his right adductor three weeks before the US national outdoor championships. He competed in the tournament after receiving a plasma injection and won silver in the 1500m. (letsrun.com, 02 Jul 2019; sbnation.com, 07 Aug 2017)

He missed the 2016 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, OR, United States of America, as he was recovering from a stress reaction in his leg. (olympics.nbcsports.com, 27 May 2016)

He played several sports growing up, and took up running during summer meets at middle school. He began to take the sport more seriously during his second year of high school. "I didn't even make varsity during my freshman year. It was fun and that's what it's really about in high school. I still keep in contact with a lot of the guys who were on my team, we're best friends. It's important to make it fun at a young age because you can get burnt out so easy." (runningtimes.com, 01 Jan 2007; Anne Arundel County Public Schools YouTube channel, 08 Mar 2017)
:
He began aiming to compete at an elite level after receiving a sports scholarship at the University of Oregon. "Once I realised I had more of a future and more potential in athletics, it just made sense to put all my focus into that and see how far I could really go with the sport." General Interest

General
CLUB CHANGE
In 2019 he joined Bowerman Track Club in Portland, OR, United States of America, a group coached by Jerry Schumacher. He had previously trained in Portland with the Nike Oregon Project [NOP]. "I got as much as I needed out of the Nike Oregon Project program. Everyone gets to a point where it's time to kind of mix things up, and I felt like that's where I was in my career. I felt like had I been coming out of college right now, Bowerman would be like the Oregon Project that I joined in 2012. Just a bunch of 5k guys, 3k guys around my level that could pull me along in a lot of workouts. It just felt right, it felt comfortable. I've known Jerry over the years since we obviously were based in Portland. So it was an easy transition for me." (letsrun.com, 02 Jul 2019; sbnation.com, 07 Aug 2017; flotrack.org, 06 Oct 2019; oregonlive.com, 18 Jun 2015)

SUB-TWO HOUR MARATHON PACEMAKER
In 2019 he was part of the pacemaking team when Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge ran the first ever sub-two hour marathon in Vienna, Austria. However, the result did not count as an official record because it was not run under race conditions. "[I was] just thinking how much of an honour it was to be one step in front of Kipchoge, a once-in-a-generation athlete." (ineos159challenge.com, 12 Oct 2019; letsrun.com, 12 Oct 2019)

TURNING PROFESSIONAL
He forewent his last year of National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] eligibility at the University of Oregon to turn professional in November 2011. "I'd accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish at the University of Oregon. I figured this was the best decision." (runblogrun.com, 29 Nov 2011; Anne Arundel County Public Schools YouTube channel, 08 Mar 2017; runnersworld.com, 28 Jan 2012)
