In December 2018 he underwent surgery for appendicitis. Five days after he was diagnosed with Peritonitis, a life-threatening infection caused by a leakage from the burst appendix, and he was treated in hospital with antibiotics for three weeks, losing more than 20 kilogrammes. "A friend and I really wanted to travel abroad, but like a group of 16-year-olds we had no money to do so. It is then I thought maybe I should throw the shot put, because if I reach the national team I'll get to travel abroad for free." He later converted to discus after failing to progress in shot put.
