She won a pre-season time trial in the mile, which led her to join the track and cross-country teams at her school. "I didn't like it at all. I liked that I was good at it, but I didn't understand it. It was just something that I was doing." She began taking athletics more seriously once she realised that she could earn a college scholarship through the sport. (nytimes.com, 16 Jun 2021)

"I would like people to think of somebody who is just like them, just a normal person. But I would like them to see my strength. I feel like I'm a really strong runner and that's something that is a pretty big staple of my career. I guess I would like them to see that." (wwd.com, 23 Jul 2021)

SMALL-TOWN ROOTS
She grew up on a dairy farm in Montgomery, VT, United States of America. Starting at about 05:00 or 06:00, she would milk between 30 and 40 cows before going to school. She is still based in her hometown, which has a population of about 1200. "I definitely learned a work ethic on the farm growing up, and that's something that I carry with me in my career every day at practice and while I compete as well. But at this level, you know everybody knows how to work hard. So that's where I learned my work ethic, but I'm not necessarily saying that I work harder than everybody else. I do come from a rural small community and seeing how excited everybody is [about the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo] is just amazing. It's so humbling. It definitely gives me a greater bit of motivation and it will in the race. I'll be thinking about them." (wwd.com, 23 Jul 2021)
