She took up the sport for fun, sprinting around the buildings where she grew up in Queens, NY, United States of America. "There was a time when I used to dance as much as I ran track, and I loved dancing but when it came time to make a choice, because I could not do both, I knew that the right answer was track and field. When I made that decision I was in high school. I started to realise I can go far in this sport, and I had something else to give this sport. I needed to follow that drive and passion for running." General Interest

General
PUSHED BY RIVAL
She set a world record in the 400m hurdles on two occasions in 2019. The first time was at 2019 US Championships, where she broke the mark set by Russian athlete Yuliya Pechonkina in 2003, and she then bettered her own time at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Muhammad's US teammate Sydney McLaughlin won silver in Doha, finishing with a time that would have been quick enough for a world record just 10 weeks earlier, and Muhammad believes it is only a matter of time before an athlete breaks the 52-second barrier. "World records are broken when you have such strong talent in the race. Sydney's young. She'll be there for the rest of my career. I'm just going to try to go with that, and see what's possible." (latimes.com, 04 Oct 2019)

COACHING SWITCH
She began working with coach Yolanda Demus in 2013. She was affected by injury and loss of form over the next two years, and in 2016 she decided to switch coaches and start training with Lawrence Johnson. "I was faster than I had ever been with my new coach. I knew I was a different athlete." (latimes.com, 18 Oct 2019; si.com, 07 Aug 2019)
