She attended the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as her father worked as an FBI security liaison officer, and was inspired to take up athletics after watching Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj win gold in both the 1500m and 5000m. "Undoubtedly, that's when the seed was planted. It felt strangely normal to get to meet athletes and be at the Games. It was all integrated with my dad's job. Now, you look at how complicated it is from the athlete's perspective and how special it is to be at the Games. You didn't fully appreciate it as a child. It's such a huge, crazy event. You have to think about the reward in the end. Being exposed to that when you are young makes you realise it's a realistic goal." (floridagators.com, 26 Jun 2021; sunherald.com, 22 Jul 2021)
