He was also named USTFCCCA Midwest Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2018 and 2020, and USTFCCCA Midwest Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 he considered leaving university and turning professional, but decided to delay doing so until after he had completed his bachelor's degree at the University of South Dakota. "At the time when I considered [turning professional], it was almost like a flash-in-the-pan sort of thing. Having that financial security was priority. Pole vault is fun and I enjoy doing it, but it's kind of up and down financially." In 2020 he turned professional with the intention of continuing his studies while training and competing. "To finally put it on paper, it feels spectacular. I just finished up my bachelor's degree in kinesiology [speaking in mid-2020] at the University of South Dakota, and I am in the process of going to graduate school to get my master's degree in the same field."
