She suffered a hip injury [labrum] in 2013. She decided against having an operation, continuing to compete throughout the season, and only had surgery after the 2013 World Championships. After two years of recovery and setbacks, she competed at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, People's Republic of China, but failed to qualify for the final due to suffering a hip injury during the championships. "The pain in the hip goes away and comes back." (runblogrun.com, 27 Mar 2016; tribune.com.pk, 27 Aug 2015)

She began running in the seventh grade at school, and had changed to long jump by the 11th grade. (spikesmag.com, 01 Jan 2008)

"My track coach brought the basketball team out to the long jump pit and said whoever jumps longest gets a Coke. He wouldn't let me do that as I was running the 400m at the time but as time progressed I kept begging him. When I did, I jumped 16ft and he couldn't believe it and told me to go back and do it again. I did it again and was close to 17ft. Not only did I win the Coke but I won the chance to do long jump as I was tired of the 400m." (athleticsweekly.com, 03 Jan 2018)

General Interest

General
OUT AT THE TOP
She has hinted that she may retire following the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which will be her fourth Games, or possibly after the 2021 World Championships in Eugene, OR, United States of America. "I still enjoy going to training. I still enjoy the working out for the most part. But the aches and pains don't go away as quickly as they used to. It's definitely not as easy to get out of bed in the morning. I have a son. He's in sports himself and he actually won the long jump in San Diego for his age group. I was coaching him a little bit. But yeah, it's time for me to be a mother and be there for him, so I'm going to try to go out with a bang." (teamusa.org, 29 Jul 2019; mississippitoday.org, 23 Aug 2019)

MOTHER
In 2016 she adopted her son Alex from a long time friend, who could no longer raise him. "He is a good motivator. He is at the end of the runway saying, 'Let's go, Brittney!'" (mississippitoday.org, 23 Aug 2019; olympics.nbcsports.com, 21 Apr 2016)

OUTSIDE HELP
She started working with a life coach in 2013 after she began experiencing issues with a labrum injury in her hip. The problem affected her for about two years. "The reason why I've been working with her is because I was in a down place after my surgery, where I didn't think I would be. Having her on my side and directing me where I need to be and putting my mind in the right place, I've been on top ever since." (mississippitoday.org, 23 Aug 2019)
