He sustained a right knee injury in 2017 after walking into a door at his home. In January 2018 he twisted his left foot during a training session which put additional pressure on his right knee. He resumed training with the injuries and competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, where he won gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m events.
