He began athletics in primary school, but did not start taking it seriously until 2011. (Athlete, 26 Jul 2014; monitor.co.ug, 22 Jul 2013)
:
He loved running as a child. He first took up a football scholarship at his primary school because it was the only option offered, but after winning a 10,000m school sports tournament he was encouraged to switch to a school that had an athletics programme. "I was really young but I used to join in the 5000m and 10,000m against the older boys and run the first three laps or so. I was very short and they were very tall but when they tried to overtake me I would speed up and try not to let them pass me. I would continue until I got too tired, but I always loved to run."
