"My family are farmers in a rural area [in Ethiopia] and my home was five or six kilometres from my school. When I went there in the morning, and when I went home in the evening, I would run. I started from that point, and the school organised some races. Most of those races I won, and more of my teachers and my family members were encouraging me to run as a member of a club." General Interest

General
LONDON MARATHON WIN
After winning the 2020 London Marathon in England, he said he was motivated as he felt that he had been disregarded as a contender in the race. "Everyone was focused on two athletes - [Eliud] Kipchoge and [Kenenisa] Bekele - and I didn't get any attention. I told myself that I will prove to the world that there is another champion and this feeling is what made me able to sprint to the end with full confidence and energy." (bbc.co.uk, 15 Oct 2020)

EARLY DAYS
He was born to farmers in Ethiopia and has seven siblings. "I loved studying and I wanted to be a doctor or a pilot but I come from a poor background and I had to leave school to help my parents at home in the farm. I never thought that one day I would become a star and travel around the world. Because of athletics I am living a life I never imagined." (bbc.co.uk, 15 Oct 2020; nyrr.og, 04 Nov 2019)
