In early 2010 he suffered a stress fracture in his right tibia [lower leg]. He required surgery and did not return to action until July 2011. In January 2012 he fractured the same bone again and needed another operation. He did not return to competitive action until the 2013 European Champion Clubs Cup in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal. His family moved to Odivelas, Portugal, and they lived in the same building as Portuguese high jumper Joao Ganco and his family. Evora would play with Ganco's son David, so Ganco suggested he take up athletics like his son. He initially took part in high jump, but after injuring a knee he switched to long jump and triple jump.
