He initially took part in gymnastics, but a growth spurt at age 13 hindered his progress in the sport and his coach suggested he should try pole vault. "I was good in gymnastics but within one summer I gained a lot of height and after that I was not suited for gymnastics. So then I began pole vaulting at Panellinios GS with coach Dimitris Kyteas." He tested positive for the prohibited substance etilefrine at the 2007 Hellenic Championships in Greece. He was initially suspended for two years by the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics [SEGAS], but his suspension was later reduced by six months by the International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF].
