After suffering injuries to both legs in January 2021, he said he had given up on competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He was able to resume training in March, but earned selection for the Games by triumphing in the 10,000m event at the 2021 Japanese National Championships in Shizuoka in early May. "Honestly, I gave up on the 2020 Games. I thought my stamina and speed had gone, but I bounced back better than I expected while focusing on tempo runs. About three weeks before the national championships, I began training on almost the same regime I had for previous editions of the event, but I was able to do it faster, so I went in with a lot of confidence."
