He says he chose to focus on the 10,000m event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo because of his hero Kokichi Tsuburaya, who competed in the distance as well as the marathon at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. He was born in Tsuburaya's hometown of Sukagawa, Japan, and took up athletics at the Tsuburaya Runners club. "I have always felt a connection with Tsuburaya. As he also competed in the 10,000m at the 1964 Games, I worked hard in order to compete in that event at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
