He says the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, Germany, were a turning point for him after he failed to make the pole vault final at the tournament. "I hit rock bottom in Berlin. After I vaulted a 5.30m at the [Belgian] national championships the month before, I began working with a psychologist, but it was already too late for Berlin. Despite the bad performance it showed me how resilient I could be. My support group helped on an emotional level, which should never be a taboo subject." In 2019 he set a Belgian national outdoor record of 5.76m and later reached the pole vault final at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
