LONG STAY IN JAPAN
In November 2019 he, along with three other South Sudanese athletes and their coach Joseph Omirok, travelled to Maebashi, Japan, where they planned to stay until after the 2020 Olympic Games. When the 2020 Games were postponed by a year, the group decided to remain in Japan, making use of training facilities that they would not have access to in South Sudan. The City of Maebashi established a fund to allow the athletes to stay until the Games took place, and by May 2021 more than 30,000,000 Japanese yen had been raised through a nationwide donation scheme. "Before I reached Japan, I didn't know what kind of people the Japanese are. The love I got here is more than even what I expected. So I have not missed home so much because I am staying in a very peaceful environment with very loving people. I was very surprised at that. When I get back [to South Sudan], the message I will have is the importance of peace. That is the biggest message I will say to my people."
