He abandoned athletics at age 18 due to a lack of funding and joined the Colombian Armed Forces, who then recognised his potential for athletics and offered him financial support to balance his work commitments with pursuing a career in the sport. "I decided to join the army because I liked the military life but, above all, because I have always admired soldiers. That's why I feel proud to represent them and the institution in every competition." In December 2020 he was promoted from corporal to second sergeant.
