He decided to focus on his administrative position with the Colombian police at age 25 and put his sporting career on hold. But, six years later, he was inspired to return to elite sport after watching Colombian race walkers Eider Arevalo and Esteban Soto, who he used to compete against at junior level, performing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "When I returned to high performance sport at age 31 I asked myself if I could be up to the task. But after knowing that there are race walkers aged 36 and 45 who perform in the 50km event and are very good, I said that age was not an issue to restart from scratch." (El Colombiano, 09 May 2021)
