In 2014 she began throwing seriously at the Sports Authority of India centre in Badal, India, where she switched from shot put to discus. She was originally hesitant to pursue a career in athletics due to her family's financial situation and because her mother was opposed to it, but she changed her mind with the support of her father. "Initially, my mother was not willing that I should go out and pursue a sports career. But my father supported me and when I won medals at national level, they felt hopeful. Now, when I qualified for [the 2020] Olympics, it has given them tremendous happiness. My father is a farmer. As it happens in villages, girls are under pressure to get married at a very early age. I knew that if I don't do well at studies and am not able to make it to a good college, my fate would be the same. However, I was determined not to meet that fate. I wanted to do something different.
