At age six he started taking part in athletic sports such as running, jumping, and throwing. He also followed his older brother into judo for four years. (iaaf.org, 07 Jan 2007)

His preference for jumping came at age 15 through good results. "In these age categories, it's easier to perform better in the long jump, so I naturally focused on the event where I had better results." His rapid improvements in the triple jump saw him switch focus progressively.
