She is a family relative of boxer Mate Parlov, who won gold representing Yugoslavia in the light heavyweight category at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. "First my dad signed me up to handball training, and handball was my first love. In the eighth grade of primary school I competed in the 600m in inter-school competition. My physical education teacher was also an athletics coach, and she encouraged me to take up the sport. I began training and soon started achieving good results in competitions, so I decided to give up handball." Coach Slavko Petrovic encouraged her to take up marathon running after she changed clubs.
