He was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, United States of America by a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother. He was part of the US 4x400m relay team that won gold at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, before deciding to switch to representing Nigeria. "Something just came over me after I made the US junior team. Nigeria needs help in a lot of different ways and I feel like I can be the person to bridge the gap between the Nigerian athletes in Nigeria, and the Nigerian athletes in America.
