He switched from Cuba to represent Turkey in 2013. He felt it was difficult to qualify for the Cuban national team, which led him to hire a private coach, and he was eventually recruited by Turkish club Fenerbahce in 2013. "One door was closed and another opened. In Cuba it was hard. Turkey is the country that saw all the talent I have. I was not looking for money, I just wanted to show the world how much potential I have and that I could reach the top of the athletic universe."
