MENTAL HEALTH
She considered quitting the sport in 2019 due to mental health issues. Her coaches, teacher and friends at the University of Southern California convinced her to continue. "The two things that I don't like to talk about are that I have battled depression on and off since 10th grade and that I am a perfectionist. I don't like to ask for help, I don't like to seem weak, I don't like to let people know that I struggle. For me, I internalised the idea of 'working through' as literally continuing to work at the most ferocious pace possible. You know, collecting achievements, and making the grades, and going super hard in practice, and ultimately working towards burn out. It was suffocating to sit in your own issues and not tell anyone and isolate and not talk about it and everything keeps escalating. I'm grateful that in my personal circle [talking about] it opened up a conversation." (charlotteobserver.com, 13 Jul 2021; popsugar.co.uk, 29 Jun 2021; ocregister.com, 05 Jul 2020)
