In December 2019 he underwent surgery on his left hand after injuring a tendon in the ring finger. The injury kept him out of training for one month and obliged him to miss the entire indoor season. His father, a big fan of Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka, enrolled him in athletics training at the nearby Estadio Pedro Sola in Marilia, Brazil.
