She sustained an herniated disc in her back in 2013. She did not want to undergo surgery so her husband Everton, who is a qualified chiropractor, treated the injury. Her mother competed in athletics and encouraged her to get involved in the sport. Andressa also practised shot put and hammer throw at first, but in 2012 she decided to focus on discus throw. "About a year after I first took up the sport, I competed against my mother in a regional competition. She won that one, but it didn't take too long for me to get the best of her."
