He took up the sport in Londrina, Brazil. (cob.org.br, 14 May 2020)

He was a futsal goalkeeper and he was inspired to take up the sport after watching Brazilian athlete Maurren Maggi winning gold in long jump at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. "Before the Games I was invited to train at the athletics track in Londrina. I didn't have the interest, I only wanted to play futsal. But I saw [coach] Nelio Moura and Maurren Maggi and when she won the medal she went and embraced Nelio, and both of them cried. That image is still in my mind. It was very inspiring and I said 'I want to experience that feeling.' I then went back to the track. I didn't know yet what I would do but I wanted to live that emotion."
