In March 2018 he was diagnosed with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow after feeling discomfort. He was out of action for more than a year and was forced to change his throwing technique to mitigate the injury without undergoing surgery. (lavanguardia.com, 27 Aug 2020)

His mother was an athlete and introduced him to the sport. "My parents were not especially interested in me throwing javelin. What they did insist on was that I did sports and I have tried everything. I started with kung fu, then a year of swimming, as well as Basque pelota, football, handball and then all of the disciplines within athletics from long jump to discus. I have always been quite active. I played football in the youth teams of SD Eibar with Mikel Oyarzabal, who has now played for Spain. We played in the same position and, for obvious reasons, he was almost always the one who played in the matches." (euskadi.eus, 15 Mar 2018; mundodeportivo.com, 24 Feb 2018)

SHOULDER INJURY
He says his performance at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo will be affected by an ongoing shoulder injury, which has bothered him throughout 2021 and impacted his ability to train. "I could not throw twice a week during the season, I can't do that much work. My shoulder and my body needed rest. My shoulder is not in ideal condition, but I have been strong enough to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, so I am happy, and I will be strengthening the joint as much as I can. I have to compete compromised, but all that suffering has been rewarded with a place for the Games. Despite the injury I have been able to throw more than 80 metres, so reaching the final would be a spectacular result, but after the first few throws my shoulder will be hanging. That is why I'm going to enjoy the experience, to compete with the best of my sport and see teammates and rivals that I have not seen in years." (deia.eus, 10 Jul 2021; runnersworld.com, 01 Jun 2021)

POSITIVE POSTPONEMENT
He believes he has benefited from the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, after he was forced to change his throwing technique following a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his right elbow in 2018. "The postponement suited me perfectly as I had more time to recover from the injury in my elbow and continue the adaptation to the new technique I had to introduce to avoid surgery."
