He played football for DJK VFL Willich in Germany until 2015, when he chose to focus on athletics. He quit football after his club failed to gain promotion to the top regional division in the Lower Rhine. "I was disappointed and wanted to try something different, especially since the teachers at school saw early on that I could run well. He runs 150 kilometres per week in training, using a mix of endurance and speed training.
