General Interest

General
PARENTS AND COACHES
He is coached by his parents, Stefanie and Michael Kaul, both former international-level athletics competitors for Austria and Germany, respectively. "It is not possible to separate the roles. My parents are the people I can talk to about everything, but they are also my coaches. We have a very relaxed relationship, even though we train at a high level. My parents never told me to be an athlete just because they both were. They always said that as long as I am happy with what I do, so are they. They have designed my training so that it fits around my studies. It is good for me to have a life outside of sports. I feel that I need this other challenge and I like surrounding myself with people who have nothing to do with sport. I can be just a normal student like them." (fr.de, Dec 26, 2019; bento.de, 12 Dec 2019)

REPRESENTING GERMANY
His father is German, while his mother is Austrian. He considered representing Austria in his youth, but decided to represent the country he was born in. "There were discussions about representing Austria. At the time I could not foresee how things would develop, and it might have been easier to compete for Austria, but I thought, 'I live here in Germany, I grew up here, it would be nice if I could represent Germany'. Besides, I cannot sing the Austrian national anthem." (fr.de, Dec 26, 2019; n-tv.de, 25 Dec 2019)

APPLE SAUCE
He eats German apple sauce in between events when competing, and says he ate over one kilogram during the two-day decathlon event at the world championships in Doha, Qatar in 2019. "I brought it with me from Germany." (watson.de, 04 Oct 2019; t-online.de, 04 Oct 2019)
