He took up athletics at age 11, initially mainly in preparation for the cross-country skiing season. He began focusing on running at age 16. (runnersworld.no, 21 Sep 2014; blog.runningcoach.me, 20 Jun 2018)

He was a promising cross-country skier at a young age, but decided to pursue a running career after he finished sixth in the junior race at the 2007 European Cross-Country Championships in Toro, Spain. "I wanted a real challenge and so I decided to focus on running. However, distance running at the highest level is very un-Norwegian in my hometown. So, I knew that, if I wanted to train at the highest level, this would mean training mostly alone. I started to get tired of always having to travel to find snow conditions, and the hysteria surrounding having the best ski equipment to be competitive seemed crazy to me. Running is so much simpler. Two legs is all you need." (runnersworld.no, 21 Sep 2014; blog.runningcoach.me, 20 Jun 2018)

To win an Olympic medal in the marathon. (fastrunning.com, 22 Aug 2019)
:
"In my typical marathon build-up, I'll run about 200-220 kilometres a week and can sometimes go as high as 240 kilometres." (fastrunning.com, 22 Aug 2019; spikes.worldathletics.org, 16 Sep 2019)

Coach Renato Canova. (spikes.worldathletics.org, 16 Sep 2019)
:
"You need to meet the following three criteria. First, you have to free your mind. Second, you have to believe in the training you are doing, and third, you need to make sure that you recover from your workload in time, in order not to get too exhausted." (blog.runningcoach.me, 20 Jun 2018)
