In October 2013 he underwent right knee surgery on his meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament [ACL]. He resumed throwing training four months later. (Facebook page, 23 Oct 2013, 06 Feb 2014)

In 2019 he received the Coach of the Year award from the Norwegian Athletics Coaches Association. He shared the honour with his late coach Einar Brynemo, and the award recognised that he had been self-coached since Brynemo died in July 2018. (aftenposten.no, 03 Nov 2019)
