At the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, Germany, he sustained an injury to his right elbow during a pole vault warm-up and required surgery to replace the ulnar collateral ligament. After competing in early 2019, he missed the northern hemisphere summer that year due to the injury and returned to competition in January 2020.
