16-YEAR-OLD RECORD BROKEN
In 2019 at the Chicago Marathon she broke Paula Radcliffe's world marathon record [2:15:25] that had stood since 2003, recording a time of 2:14:04. The record came one day after Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge ran an unofficial sub-two-hour men's marathon. She said she used Kipchoge's achievement as motivation. "I kept saying, 'Tomorrow is my day'. I wanted to be the second Kipchoge - the Kipchoge for women. I focused on that. I think 2:10 is possible for a lady. I am focused on reducing my time again." (nytimes.com, 13 Oct 2019; theguardian.com, 13 Oct 2019)

EARLY DAYS
At age 17 she left school to pursue her running career as her family could not afford the school fees. "My mother tried to convince me to stay on by saying she would borrow the money but I told her, 'For how long will we keep borrowing?' I could not be sad. At that time I just accepted what had happened and focused on other things." (bbc.co.uk, 20 Oct 2019; xinhuanet.com, 20 Dec 2019)
