His father Guillermo was a national champion in pole vault in Argentina on five occasions, and his older brother Guillermo Jr. participated in pole vault at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. Until he was age 14 he participated in football and athletics. His football coach tried to persuade him to quit athletics, but he chose to pursue pole vault because his family have a tradition in the discipline.
