In 2019 she chose to reveal that she is gay to her coach, and came out publicly in September 2020. "The sports world is heteronormative, there were no homosexual role models. I felt like I wasn't normal. A lot of people talk about their own relationships, which are heterosexual relationships. My coach Matti Mononen couldn't have taken it better, it was nothing to him. I have felt that I have wanted to talk about it. It's not been distressing, but it weighs on your mind. It has certainly helped me to express this, at least in some way. I'm lucky that no one had a problem with it. It is an unfortunate fact that many people are not accepted, I'm grateful my family didn't make a big deal out of it.
