Her mother Ringa Ropo represented Finland in long jump at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and won multiple national championships. Her father Juha Junnila competed in long jump internationally, and her partner Mikko Rummakainen has also competed in long jump internationally. Her parents were international-level long jumpers so she would spend time at the athletics field as a toddler, and began formal training at age 15. "There were good mats and piles of sand. She was inspired to compete in high jump after seeing it on television. "There had just been some prestigious competitions and I saw the high jump on television. I definitely wanted to be among those kids jumping so high. I barely made it onto the mattress in the beginning, but that's where it started.
