He was inspired by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt after watching him win gold in the 100m at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing on television. Although the athletics team at his middle school was dissolved due to a shortage of athletes, a teacher helped him continue with the sport. After joining an athletics team at high school, he was encouraged to focus on the 400m by his coach in the 11th grade.
