LEADER
In July 2021 he was named as captain of the Japanese delegation of athletes for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I feel a great responsibility being appointed captain in our own nation. We're in a very difficult situation but that doesn't change what we have to do. We'll proudly bear the nation's emblem on our chests, abide by the code of conduct and strive to do our best to deliver as much good news to the people as possible." He also captained the Japanese team at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. "It was a big honour for me to be appointed captain in Indonesia but I certainly felt the pressure. Though everybody told me not to worry about it too much, as an athlete I couldn't help but worry until the competition results came in."
